I manage a non-union shop and want to remain non union, if a union attempts to organize my employees what services could you provide?

It is critical for supervisors to become familiar with the issues that are involved in organizing. We would recommend that you look to an outside law firm or consulting firm to receive training.

We recommend you begin training your supervisors immediately about what they legally can and cannot say to employees about unions.  It is critical that they have the knowledge and confidence necessary to engage and educate their employees on union organizing.

We offer training on employee issues, union campaigns, card signing, Supervisory Do’s and Dot Not’s, Basic Principles of the NLRA, etc. via several media outlets such as PowerPoint and videos or in person training.

I have a union organizing campaign and I don’t know any labor attorneys or consultants, can PTI refer someone?

Absolutely, not only do we work with top labor attorneys from around the country but we also work with the largest and most successful labor relations firm in the country.

I am a business owner and I have X union sites (IBT Represented) and Y non-union, I am worried about the union targeting my non-union operations, how can I keep tabs on what the union is doing?

To stay consistently up to date regarding union organizing we have a report called The Union Awareness Report. The Union Awareness Report is a monthly retainer report of any and all formal unionizing activity broken down to your specific location, your industry, and specific unions or even nationally.  We have found this to be the best tool available to organizations that accurately predicts future organizing.

We also have a report called Site Selection which is an in depth analysis that measures trends of organizing within the area you are considering establishing a business site.

I just received a petition from the IBEW seeking to represent my employees, who should I call, a labor attorney or PTI?

The first thing you should do is contact a labor attorney. However, if you do not have an attorney and wish to get information on IBEW before selecting a course of action then we are a great source of information because we have tracked virtually every case filed by all unions in this country for the last 20 years, and can recommend an experienced labor attorney in your area.

One of my employees just found a union authorization card in the break room, should I be concerned and how can services offered by PTI help me.

You must consider an authorization card to be a formal notice that your employees are being actively organized by a union and take immediate action.  If you have actual evidence of an authorization card that means the union has probably been actively organizing for some time and is way ahead of you.  However, the good news is, with a few pro-active actions, you can begin taking back the initiative from the union and slows down or even stops organizing.

With the information you have you must then choose a route to education your management and employees on the union and what unionizing would mean to them and your business.

I am having trouble getting my front line supervisors comfortable with what they can and cannot say about the union, how can PTI help me increase their comfort level?

Employers often assume that management training is most effective when done by labor attorneys.  Our experience doesn’t support this assumption.  Too often our consultants work with management teams who have received training performed by labor attorneys that effectively intimidates them from saying anything to employees for fear of violating the law. They remember what they CANNOT SAY and end up doing nothing.

What our labor arm focuses on is what management CAN DO and SAY during an organizing campaign. The goal is to ensure that management feels comfortable engaging employees and handling resistance from union supporters. Our belief is management has the obligation to passionately educate their employees on unions and ensure that the employees understand the pros and cons of joining a union.  Our consultants leave themselves open to questions at any time and follow up after their training to make sure that their training was worthwhile and effective and answer any and all questions that employees may have.
