A National Labor Relations Board hearing scheduled Tuesday has been canceled after UPMC and the board reached an agreement on an unfair labor practices complaint.
The NLRB withdrew the complaint filed in January, alleging 13 instances of the health system discouraging union organizing at three UPMC hospitals over the past year, NLRB Supervising AttorneyPatty Daum said. A hearing on the charges had been scheduled Tuesday.
Daum said the board withdrew the complaint against UPMC on Monday after reaching the agreement. The Services Employees International Union has not yet signed off on the settlement and has the option of appealing the board’s decision, Daum said.
Lawyer Claudia Davidson, who represented SEIU, declined comment. Union officials did not return calls. SEIU has been trying to organize hourly workers at UPMC hospitals for a couple years and the complaint was the third filed against the hospital since 2013.
“UPMC is pleased to resolve this matter with the NLRB,” spokeswoman Gloria Kreps said in a prepared statement. “We believe that this is a good outcome for UPMC, each of the named organizations and their employees.”
