Police union upset over APD's new weapons policy
By: Stuart Dyson

The Albuquerque police officers union is upset over the police department's brand new policy on handguns.

APD is requiring all officers to carry a standard department-issued firearm, which will be either a Smith and Wesson 9mm semi-automatic handgun or a similar gun made by Glock.

Union president Stephanie Lopez calls it a knee-jerk reaction and a safety issue for veteran officers who've been using other weapons - personal guns they acquire themselves - for many years.

Chief Gorden Eden said the US Department of Justice wants to see uniformity in weapons.

The union said it's a contractual issue and they were not consulted.

The DOJ investigation into the police department concluded that many officers see guns as status symbols in an APD "culture of aggression".
