Wabush Steelworkers' Union Losing Retiree Benefits

The Steelworkers' Union in Wabush has been informed that, as of June 1st, their retiree medical benefits and the $12,500 retiree life insurance benefit will be terminated due to Cliffs' creditor protection filing. In a message posted to his Facebook page, Steelworkers' Union President Jason Penney says he's met with the union's international reps and with their legal department to discuss the matter.

 US-based Cliffs Natural Resources officially closed Wabush Mines permanently last fall and filed for creditor protection in Canada back in January. The company employed up to 500 people in the region.
